Part 3 in our 4 part winter series
Your winter curl survival guide (No Scissors Needed!)
Let’s be real: no product can magically glue your split ends back together (we wish!). But here’s the good news — you can make your ends look and feel smoother, softer, and way less frayed, all without booking a last-minute trim.
In the colder months, your curls are more vulnerable to snapping, splitting and general 'scragginess'. But before you panic-grab the scissors, here’s how to protect and disguise dry ends while keeping your shape intact.
Seal & Smooth with Products
In Part 2 of our winter care series we talked about about hydration and sealing. (Missed it? Catch up HERE!) Your ends are a perfect example of why both matter. They’re the oldest part of your hair — and often the driest too. So a little extra TLC goes a long way.
When styling use a hydrating gel like Oomph or Pow to seal in the hydrating (Aka water). Using a product thats super hydrating creates a protective layer over each strand, smoothing the surface, softening the feel, and adding instant shine.
Bonus? Using a gel (or any of LOHY.'s products helps reduce breakage and friction — making it less likely your ends will fray further.)

Night-Time Protection
Your curls deserve a little beauty sleep too! And unfortunately, cotton pillowcases, winter jumpers and puffer jackets don’t always play nice. They create friction, which leads to dryness, knots, and yes — more splits.
To keep things silky smooth while you snooze, try popping your curls in a cosy.
Whats a cozy? I'm glad you asked! A cozy is a lightweight, stretchy tube that goes over your curls to protect them while you sleep.
What does it do? It shields your curls form pillow friction and tangles. It's like cosy pyjamas for your hair!
Want to give your curls some extra TLC? Combine your sleep protection with a light touch of oil on the ends before bed. You’ll wake up with hair that feels nourished, not knotted.
Try Protective Styles
Wind, rain, woolly coats — winter can be a rough ride for your ends. Tucking them away in a loose protective style helps shield them from the elements and limits all that rubbing and tugging from scarves and collars.
Low-maintenance go-to’s?
-
A loose braid or two
-
A soft bun (not too tight and use a silk or satin scrunchie)
-
The ever-reliable pineapple
Not only do these styles look cute, but they’ll also help you stretch time between trims and keep your curls feeling fresh through the week.
The more moisturised your curls are, the less likely they are to split and snap. That’s why regular deep conditioning is essential — especially when the weather turns chilly and dry.

Pop on a treatment (your favourite mask or conditioner will do), then use the LOHY. Cold Shoulder Guard for an at-home steaming session in the shower. Learn how to create an at home steam session HERE.
Pro tip: Focus extra product on your mid-lengths and ends — they need the most love!
You will still need the occasional dusting (we love a healthy trim when it’s needed!), but with a bit of a winter hair care ritual, you can absolutely stretch out cuts and keep your ends looking fresh, even through winter.
