Here's Part 1 of our Curly Brides Guide to embracing your natural hair on your big day.
Curly Brides - It’s Officially Wedding Season!!!
When choosing a date for your wedding, there are a lot of things to consider!
Climate, vendor availability & demand, guests, location, the In-Laws (JOKING!!).
The good news is that there is no right and wrong time of the year to get married! And, If you're lucky enough to live in Australia and want to get married here, each season will come with its own pro’s and con’s.
Why October & November are Ideal for Curly Brides in Australia
According to statistics, October and November are the most popular months to get married in Australia. (March and April are a close second).
Why? Typically these months have less humidity and gentler weather, making these months perfect for outdoor celebrations. With less wind and humidity to contend with, your makeup and wedding hairstyles will remain picture perfect so you can focus on celebrating without the stress of unruly hair on your big day.
Lucky for those with curly hair, embracing your natural curls and wearing your hair curly on your big day, has never been easier to achieve.
How to Make Your Curly Wedding Hair Last All Day
With the right preparation and some bomb proof techniques, your wedding hair can last all day- and all night! From the aisle to the dance floor- here’s our top 5 tips for making your wedding style last.
For hair that lasts, it’s all about the beginning and the end! The foundation of any good hairstyle is the base.
- If you’re opting to wear your hair out on your big day, you want to be doing it on thoroughly washed and conditioned hair.
- For an Updo, you can get away with not washing it that day, providing it isn't loaded up on styling products (many stylists recommend a bit of “day two grit” in the hair to help hold the structure).
Using a lightweight mousse or curl cream (depending on your hair type) will help to define curls without weighing them down. This sets a solid foundation for your next step of styling.
Choose Products Wisely
Humidity is lower in October and November, however to avoid any potential frizz, use styling products that hydrate your hair. All LOHY. styling products are designed to hydrate your curls during the styling process.
For maximum hold and definition, you’ll want to use POW Strong Hold Gel and you will want to layer it with a mousse or foam such as Chutzpah Volumising Foam.
**Recently we filmed a LOHY. Live in our Facebook Group where Jonina (Founder of LOHY.) showed her curl friends how to style their hair with Chutzpah Volumising Foam and create some serious volume. The 'Expand Your Curls' technique is a perfect styling option of you want BIG curls on your wedding day!!
Diffuse Dry
Make sure curls are thoroughly dry before setting them in your chosen style. Diffusing on low heat can enhance volume and prevent curls dropping, and it's recommended for volume and definition. *Air drying doesn't usually give you as much volume, so if volume is what you're after- opt for a diffuser.
Keep It Hands-Free
Resist the urge to touch your curls as this can lead to frizz and disrupt curl definition. If you've chosen an updo for your big day, it’s best to book a pre-wedding trial with your stylist to finalise your look. Keeping your hands off your curls and having a clear plan will ensure your style stays smooth and defined all day long.
Pro Tip: It's helpful to have your basic makeup done prior to hair styling, to avoid any extra touching from your make up artist.
Finishing Touches For Lasting Definition
Remember how we said it was all about the beginning and the end? Well, the final fix for longevity is setting your curls with a light hairspray: Hold-It Shimmer Hairspray is the hero of any wedding day style! Strong enough to hold your curls in place, and flexible enough to stay soft and natural looking, without any stiffness or crunchy curls.
Five Naturally Curly Wedding Hairstyles That Embrace (and Enhance) Your Natural Curls
Choosing hairstyles that showcase your natural curls is one of the most popular choices for brides (and grooms) in 2024. As men and women embrace their god given head of curls, we’re seeing more people turn away from traditional heat styling methods and embracing their natural curly (or wavy) hair.
Here are five simple and elegant ‘wedding day hair’ options that work beautifully for curly and wavy hair:
1. Half-Up, Half-DownThis versatile look keeps curls away from the face while showcasing your natural texture. Secure the top half with a few delicate floral pins or small braids for a romantic finish
2. Curly Low Bun
A classic up-do with a modern twist, this low bun is sleek but not too tight, preserving your curls' natural volume and bounce. Leave a few face framing pieces around the face for a soft, elegant frame.
3. Side-Swept Curly Cascade
For a style that highlights length, sweep your curls to one side and secure them with decorative pins. The look is glamorous yet relaxed, perfect for beach or garden weddings.
4. Curly Crown Braid
Create a halo effect by braiding along the top of your head while allowing the rest of your curls to flow free. It’s a timeless look that embraces natural curls, giving a whimsical and soft look.
5. Classic Low Chignon with Loose Curls
If you’re drawn to timeless elegance, try a low chignon that still lets some curls hang loose around the bun. This style is refined and classic.
How To Wear A Veil On Your Wedding Day
Choosing the perfect veil for your hairstyle is key to creating a cohesive and elegant bridal look. The natural volume and texture of your curls can impact how the veil sits and flows, so choosing one that complements these features will make all the difference.
Soft Tulle Veil: Lightweight and delicate, a soft tulle veil works beautifully with curly hair. It’s easy to secure, especially when placed under an up-do or half-up style, and won’t weigh down your curls, preserving their natural bounce and movement.
Cathedral-Length Veil: For a dramatic touch, a cathedral-length veil draped over loose curls creates a stunning effect. To prevent slipping, anchor the veil securely at the crown, allowing it to flow gracefully while still showcasing your curls.
Styling Tip: When selecting a veil, consider the placement and edge details. For example lace or beaded edges add visual interest, while a simple cut edge offers a minimalist look that lets your curls be the hero.
Decorative Headpieces & Accessories
Decorative headpieces and accessories can also add some wow - adding sparkle, style, and structure to your curly hairstyle on your wedding day.
Headpieces: Tiaras, headbands, or floral crowns can enhance the shape and volume of your curls, beautifully framing your face or accentuating a parting. Choose a piece that complements your curls’ natural texture and your overall look.
Hairpins and Combs: Pearl or crystal hairpins and decorative combs can be artfully placed throughout your curls, adding subtle shine or securing sections of your style. Choose accessories with smooth edges to prevent snagging or disrupting your curls.
Whatever style you choose for your wedding day, using hydrating products and sticking to curl friendly techniques is the key to lasting, defined and photo worthy curls.
